I've had no problems using sat phones from inside GC while on
solo hikes.
I rent em from a local company for $19/day or $88/week.

the problem is the same with VHF/UHF ham HT's. Relay towers near rims
don't provide straight shots. There are hand-held aviation COM RT's.
