Yeah, good point. I suppose perhaps I'm obsessing a bit about this.
However, I did find a beacon that weighs only 4oz and costs $140.

Hi Mike...sounds possible...there are 2 springs at 140 mile as I recall...one up near base of coconino as in Matkat and one down
further at redwall...

I'm surprised cost & weight would be much of an issue given you can
rent a sat phone for $19/day or $88/week that weigh less than 1 pound
from Phileasing......
