Since you have not hiked in the Canyon before, you might consider going with the Grand Canyon Field Institute for your first hike. They are reasonably priced...

Jim, it is a big deal to hike off itinerary - in 1998 it cost the park $89,000 to search for one man that decided to change his itinerary in mid hike...
