To protect food from critters get a piece of 18" aluminum flashing (available at most hardware stores). Cut a piece slightly longer than the circumference...

We had a similar experience at Clear Creek in Nov - all over the place, but the ammo cans do the trick. We just came back from Tatahatso wash to Eminence...
