I've done it without a vest to get over to Buck Farm from the Eminence Break route and also above Tuckup to continue a down river exploration with Bob Cree....

The preferred method for crossing the river is to ask for a ride from one of the river outfits. They are generally very helpful and on the watch for hikers...
