I'm with Charlie on this one. I did a bunch of day hikes on previous trips to
the Canyon and knew what to expect on my first real backpacking trip...

Dave,
You can see an awfull lot by doing day hikes. Indian Gardens,
Dripping Springs, Horseshoe Mesa are all nice day hikes. If you do a
3-4 day trip...

To add to what Tina said, I would definitely recommend
you do North to South. Not the other way around.

I've hiked both the BA and SK trails, but not the Tonto inbetween. The SK trail is more open at the top, therefore you have more views. If you hike that...
