I've done the Cranberry route twice, and my first experience was very similar to David's. Except that we didn't turn back -- instead we wasted lots of time...

I think you are mistaken. It is the route described by Steck. It leaves the Thunder River trail shortly below the trailhead and heads south/southwest down...
