Back in the 60's I spent weekends doing heavy duty winter backpacking trips in the Adirondacks in upstate NY. Being hot was not a problem but dehydration...

Definitely not irrational. NPS and Phantom ranch staff frequently travel on GC trails at night for their own reasons and I've heard some rangers will hike...
