I'm sure that's true but think it might be a serious environmental and
water source contaminant if used away from the river. The gel
evaporates on use.

In all our years of hiking the canyon, drinking untreated river water we have
been lucky and have never become sick in the canyon. We have been careful
but...

Alum definitely works. Some people believe that aluminum is harmful and may
contribute to Alzhimers (sp?) and other health problems.
