My recollection is that the GPS units; at least those sold in previous years, were'nt as accurate in altitude as a good aneroind barometer..

Oops. Absolutely right. So even in the GC, vertical data is not as
critical and if the GPS knows not to trust the satellite fix then it
could discount...
