I use 4 "no bend em" lightweight stakes. Can be purchased at REI or
thru Campmor catalog and probably other places too. And in addition
I usually tie off...

Nic,
A beach is not a good place for a tarp. A tarp works best when you can use
trees, etc. Both a tarp and tent work best when taut.

I like a tent that goes both ways. I just did a 5-day trip and had two nights with very high and gusting winds. My partners had a tarp and were miserable...

Marty, the tent I have is a North Face Slickrock tent. It is freestanding, and was the lightest freestanding tent I could find at the time. I don't remember...
