I'm leaving for the South Bass tomorrow (10/2) and will be heading

Yes you can but the trick is getting "safely" into and then back out
of it.

The hike from BA to Havasupai Falls will take a few weeks. Best to drive it.

From the BA trailhead, it's an ~85 mile drive over rough dirt roads, or
a ~160 mile drive over paved roads to the Havasupai trailhead, then a 10
mile walk...
