Are you talking about going up Travertine from the river, or going down from the rim? For the latter, a permit is required from the Hualapai.

I'm thinking of checking out Mohawk and National canyons in a few

It may be a "bunch of bull" but I suspect it might be the cause of
the damage suffered by your speller.
