the only time I've had trouble with a tarp in GC is on top of Horseshoe Mesa in December and any time in the south rim campground from December to February....

Being able to burn some of the trash would definately help.... I guess for the weight factor you'd have to calculate the difference between MRE's and other...

light weight tarp
I also have an old Golite tarp I bought about 4 years ago which wieghs about 1 pound and stuffs into a small 3 by 6 inch stuffsack. It is 12 by 10 feet.---...
