Escalante is a pretty ambitious hike for your first time !
It's also pretty remarkable that you had such trouble with the
heat in APril.

Rattlesnakes are highly over rated as a problem when sleeping or
hiking. Like Dick says they know you are large and extremely
dangerous. Most don't rattle...
