For what it's worth, Marsanne, I also think the Hermit is harder than
other trails like the Tanner that are supposed to be more difficult.

Marsanne, We encountered a beautiful little "canyon pink" in Surprise Valley
and he was about 3 feet from the trail. He had NO interest in us and...

A friendly wave as you pass by is suggested for a snake 5 feet from
the trail. Snakes conserve venom and energy for food or defense.
