You may have been reading Colin Fletcher's book, the "Man Who Walked
Through Time". He talks about nasty sidehilling on the Esplanade
during the early part...

I don't think I said anything about "steeply sloped shale for a
number of miles" walking being what one finds on the Esplanade, or
the Point Huitzil route....
