When hiking Dick, I would guess it is just good practice to not tie
to the vegetation but I have to admit I've suspended tarps for
shelter between trees and...

That is one thing not to discount, the wind can REALLY blow on
Tilted Mesa. Can also make for a miserable nights sleep, esp. with
a tarp and not a tent.
