Closures of the N. Kaibab are very infrequent. Check the night before by calling the park's general info number and follow the cues to get to trail...

I agree there are no short cuts around it that make for an easier
trip but what a waste of elevation gain unless there is a flood.

I agree. I've done it both ways--climb the hill and try to go around. It was
faster to just go up the darn thing. It is not a big deal.
