Hi Dove...actually one can buy a sat phone for under $500 (mine is the Iridium which can be used anywhere in the world;Globalstar only works in USA mainly)...

There is an emergency beacon that transmirts to sattelites. weighs about an lb. and costs about $750.00. the sat's triangulate. It's cheaper than a sat phone...
