You just defined the best way to make a summer hike work. I would add
by water in the shade when possible. Planning the hike so you get both
water and shade...

Don't buy topo maps because they are too expensive and fragile. Buy the
Trails Illustrated map of the whole GC. When you are going hiking
someplace study it...
