I've used a tarp for one hundred percent of my GC backpacking and
that is a lot of days in 30+ years (around 700).
Pros: cheap, lightweight, 9x12' gives...

Sometimes the mule service is quickly sold-out for
dates around popular times (i.e. weekends and
holidays). They only pack a certain number of duffels
in/out...
