I've started using a tarp the past couple of years to save weight. In
addition to Bob's comments, one problem with a tarp is that you have to
be very careful...

I've used a tarp for one hundred percent of my GC backpacking and
that is a lot of days in 30+ years (around 700).
Pros: cheap, lightweight, 9x12' gives...
