What little I know of Grand Canyon NPS people makes it seem unlikely
that they wouldn't just hike down to check out 'multiple...

a strong hiker a couple of hours.

One thing I found strange in the article. A hiker signals several passing planes/helicopters. NPS receives multiple reports.
