Would it make sense to wear wool socks like the Rohner recommended
here to hike in the Grand Canyon in May or would they be too warm?

I agree with the part about the Rohner socks...that merino wool is hard to beat. Haven't bought any for awhile but they were on the expensive side.

I have a feeling I will be going that route you walked by trying
different liners till I find one. In past years I have removed liners
that worked well...
