You can always try for a walkup permit and camp at BAC (Bright Angel
Camp). Yes you will have to carry more weight but you will get more
of an outdoor...

The apparent justification is that mule trips bring in far more revenue than
cabin rentals. If there isn't a cabin bed available, then one less $370
mule...
