I certainly DO NOT fault them or anyone for using a rope! I guess I was
alluding to what you had just mentioned. I wouldn't have thought to
recommend a rope...

I've actually had good luck with the wear on the soles. The shoes
usually fail when the rolled toe delaminates. I usually have a shoe
shop re-glue the toe...
