Jim - For a day hike only, I second the Aqua Mira solution. It's
weight and volume are miniscule. I just switched from an MSR Pocket
Rocket propane stove...

Doug- you bring to light the real life scenario. Whether or not you get "the
letter" IS at the discretion of the ranger reviewing the application. I'm

Where you going? The answer might be different depending on your water
sources.
I do not recommend a filter for Colorado river water or the "salad"...

Best lightweight water filter is none. :o) Some GC hikers do use one,
but are minority.
Best current stove technology is JetBoil, but typical unit setup is...
