I hiked down to Phantom a few years back, during an earlier 'flood',
just to see what it was like. The river was definitely a lot bigger! All
the rocks...

From what I can remember from the few meteorology classes I took, Oh
so many years ago, I would say that the canyon's night-time breathing
is a katabatic...
