Reaching the base of Deva from Obi Canyon off the north rim is probably
the easiest way to do it and also the least time consuming.

I agree that a satellite phone is unnecessary for trips on corridor
trails such as Bright Angel and North and South Kaibab. I don't carry
one on other...
