IMHO, the best day hike off South Rim would be the South Kaibab trail.
But the upper switchbacks could be pretty tricky with ice on them; you
can buy cheap...

The warnings were there on permits I secured in 2007 and 2008.
The wording is pretty vague: "limited sampling", "may exceed".
