Happy Isles (in the valley near Yosemite Lodge) is the start of the
John Muir Trail (which ends at Mt Whitney). I'd recommend taking that
to the top...

I just accepted an unexpected invitation to join a 6 day trip to Yosemite, arriving to the park on September 2nd.
