Has anyone been down the road to Hack Canyon trailhead recently?
If so, what was the road conditions? How wet? How rough?
Any bad washouts?

I'm not one of the maniac hikers here, but my experience (twice) was that getting a last-minute permit was not a problem. Just be at the Back Country office...
