Yes, the route goes up from the Esplanade on the one debris slide that nicely covers the Coconino and aims just left of the spot where the road comes...

Winter hiking is great but the risk of serious winter weather should
be kept in mind. Especially pleasant are locations on the north side
getting good sun...

Winter is a fine time to do that hike. You'll need in-step crampons for your boots for traction into Hermit basin and I would suggest hiking poles too. ...
