I think the ascorbic acid chemically reacts with iodine and precipitates it. Essentially any citrus flavor will do this, or vitamin-c tabs, but I also prefer...

I am allergic to iodine so the tablets and crystals are not an option for
me. I first used a filter but have long since been using aqua-mira with no
problems...
