No problems with deer, my only problem was a ringtail that opened a zipper to eat 3 protein bars that I forgot in my pack while camped at Bright Angel/Phantom...

Double-up on that advice as your hike will have you camping at intermediate elevations in southside canyon with decreasing sun exposure as the season...
