Ah, heavy-duty mono-filament is a winner. It is 0.050" diameter nylon
cord sold for weed-eaters. Extremely strong, the crux is fixing it to the
metal ring...

What kind of nylon cord are you using? I've seen mice climbing on typical "parachute" cord so I assume you are using something different. Some kind...
