The alternate route you described, continue straight down the rubble slide through the Hermit, indeed goes, and is much to be preferred over the Hermit...

Lorie, If you're looking for a river to rim hike in that area, try Rider Canyon instead. It's quite pretty and not nearly as difficult as the 19 Mile route. ...
