The area I am refering to is below Desert View, at river level. It is red,
and appeared tobe shale. It took suseveral hours to go one mile. 49.9 did not...

Probably not Hakatai shale, that's in the Grand Canyon Series and
doesn't come up until well below the LC. Most likely you are talking
about the Hermit...
