it makes it harder to determine which were placed by early prospectors, etc.

If I'm off trail I seldom find it necessary to place cairns in the Canyon.
On rare occasion when I have used them I knock them down on my way back. I

from Harvey Butchart. Looking at the Trails Illustrated map it
branches off the Tonto...
