You could try to summit Cogswell Butte. I had never done it, but the
descriptions make it sound not terribly technical. I imagine the view
is spectacular....

As you indicated, it does not take long to hike from where the trail crosses the main deer creek flow, and starts climbing up towards the impressive...

Back in October 2010, it took about an hour to hike from the floor of Surprise Valley to the rim of the Esplanade so, you're right to think it won't take...
