I've heard that deer creek is a slot canyon and not that easy to negotiate, as I'm a pretty green hiker, I thought it would be best to go tapeats and up...

Heather, Have done the loop at least a dozen times and always prefer going clockwise tapeats to deer creek ;I always stash water at top...
