Hitchhiking illegal in the park? I've done it before going between trailheads and have been cheerfully picked up and given rides by park rangers.

I've slept on the ground with a Tyvek ground cloth much more than I've slept in a tent. But...

The best map that I know of is produced by the BLM (Arizona Strip District Office). I use this map in conjunction with 7.5-minute topos and a GPS.

Good question. I haven't driven those road yet but plan to do so sometime. I was planning on using the USGS 7.5' topo maps to navigate them along with a GPS....
