I was told, since I always go solo, that it is the "difficult" day that
signals it.
Over 10 miles will flag it, but that there is other criteria,...

It's automatic now if it's a solo trip. Also, I think anything over 10-12 miles per day?

This hike can be safely done with the right prep & planning. As has been mentioned, the key will be getting very early starts to reach your destinations...
