Well, either is possible, since his description is contradictory.

Chris, I believe Benson was talking about the trail from the top of the Redwall down to river level - not the trail along the north side of the slot heading...

As I read this, I assumed that they must have hiked down the canyon to place their caches. Otherwise, wouldn't George's cache have been closer...
