Might want to check out the new Subaru Crosstrek. It has ~8.7" of ground clearance and supposedly gets 33mpg. Some report that it is a little underpowered but...

Reid, I've had my CR-V since April of last year. 24.1 mpg is what we average in suburbia. Some city driving, but mainly a lot of hwy trips of 20+ miles. ...
