Mary, I am not surprised you turned around where you did. I think that is the hardest part of Steck's loop. But it is possible that you were looking down...

Sorry but that Redwall route is a walk down. First wife and I never took off out packs. It is steep however and you have to be comfortable on narrow ledge...

I agree with Doc. Both trips you mention are great but the Thunder River-Kanab loop is the greatest backpack in the whole GC IMHO and possibly the world....
