I hadn't seen this note before.... I believe the Tipoff name was given to the original location where the Kaibab Trail went off the edge of the Tonto...

The name probably came from the fact the Tipoff is where the South Kaibab Trail
begins a 1500-foot descent from the Tonto Platform to the Colorado
River....
