You ask about rim to rim hiking. Yes you can do it in one day. Think
about the Pikes Peak Marathon, you have done it haven' you. 14,100
feet up and down...

When I was on the BA going out in Oct 1995 - there was a group of
runners going by. Coming downhill they were pretty much expecting
everyone else to watch...
