A few other thoughts.
Our family tries to go with the proportionate rule. You shoot for a 1/4 of
your weight on really tough hikes, up to a third in extreme...

Good point. I lost my son and wife on our first trip into Thunder
River. Since we were out of water, I left them in Suprise Valley and
went to the falls....
